Weekly TUTORIAL offers students the opportunity to acquire extra curricular help during the regular school day. Students must attend tutorial four times per week (Tuesday through Friday), and attendance is taken the same as for traditional classes. Students must attend an assigned tutorial, except for days labeled Student Choice, which provides them with a choice of which of their classes to attend.  Tutorial is a built-in intervention for all students that should be utilized to the fullest. Tutorial is not a time for teachers to present new material; however a teacher may conduct a whole-class review for an upcoming test or students can make up tests during this 35 minute period.  A review the semester tutorial schedule can be found on our website under School Life/Bell and Daily Block Schedules.

San Juan Hills High School Tutoring Center  The National Honor Society (NHS) students of San Juan Hills High School offer free tutoring in the library as follows:

• Tuesday - 7:00 am - 7:45 am
• Tuesday - 2:45 pm - 3:30 pm
• Wednesday - 2:45 pm - 3:30 pm
• Thursday - 2:45 pm - 3:30 pm

The SJHHS NHS student tutors will be availalbe to help students in all subject areas.  The tutoring center is located in the corner of the library, near the whiteboards.  This is a great resource for all students.  If your child is struggling or just needs some quick help, plesae encourage them to visit the NHS tutoring centr on the days mentioned above.

Yellow Pages.  Often, retired teachers or teachers taking time away from their career will advertise turoring services in the yellow pages.  Be sure to ask for references prior to hiring a tutor and monitor tutoring sessions at your home.

Applied Psychology 161A - Applied Study Techniques - Focuses on theoretical and practical learning strategies designed to improve performance in academic and professional settings.  

Applied Psychology 161B - Advanced Learning, Study, and Testing Techniques - Emphasizes test taking stategies and test preparation related to objective and subjective tests.  Includes practical strategies designed to improve test performance and anxiety. 

Applied Psychology 140 - Educational and Vocational Training - Designed to assist students to clarify career and educational goals, and to develop and academic plan to reach those goals.  This class appears on the CUSD Approved Concurrent College Studies Course list and can be taken at SBCC for SJHHS high school credit.  Please see Concurrent College Studies page on how to enroll.

Applied Psychology 160 - Career and Vocational Exploration - Focuses on process of vocational choice through study of occupational trends and specific occupations.  Students work with information about themselves obtained from standardized tests, selected occupational information, and other measures to develop career choices.  

 Tips to Improve Study Skills

• Develop a study routine, each day and throughout the week.
• Always try and study at the same place and the same time.
• Keep a daily “to-do” list
• Choose one or two places where you can study regularly.
• Set goals for yourself.
• Do your reading assignments before the material is discussed in class.
• Note-taking is also a skill that can be learned.

• When it comes to long assignments or projects, it is important NOT to wait until the last minute.
• No cramming the night before tests! Space out your studying and get enough sleep the night before.
