Please note that the Constitution of the State of California requires that we provide a public education to you free of charge. Your right to a free education is for all school/educational activities, whether curricular or extracurricular, and whether you get a grade for the activity or class.  Subject to certain exceptions, your right to a free public education means that we cannot require you or your family to purchase materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms for any school activity, nor can we require you or your family to pay security deposits for access, participation, materials, or equipment.  Therefore, while this list suggests that students bring a number of items, they are considered voluntary.  No student will be restricted from participation if they are not sent to school.

About Mr. Groothuis

This is my third year as a Stallion and physics teacher at SJHHS.  I teach AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 along with Conceptual Physics.  Prior to teaching high school, I had been teaching 6th and 8th grade science in CUSD and also taught a Robotics and Engineering elective.  I have California credentials in Physics and Math.

Before becoming a teacher I served as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps, where I flew the CH-46E helicopter and was deployed to Iraq and Somalia, among other places, with HMM-163C SOC.  I graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and also have an MBA in Finance from the J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

I am married and have two kids. My daughter is a second year at UCLA and my son is a senior and attends Emerson College in Boston.  I sometimes referee soccer games on the weekends so there is a chance that I have given one of my students a yellow card (I won’t hold it against them).  At home I am constantly working on one project or another, often building things for use in my classroom, and I would consider myself an amateur cabinetmaker.  As I tell my spouse…”I’m slow, but really cheap.”  During the summers I enjoy backpacking and camping in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and during the winter lover to ski.  My favorite place on Earth is Yosemite and if I am skiing I am probably at Kirkwood near Lake Tahoe.  I tried snowboarding for about 4 years, but realized that I am a much better skier and am now a reformed knuckle-dragger.  For the sports enthusiasts, I am an Angels fan and Chelsea F.C. supporter.  Light up the Halo and Go Blues!  Musically, I am a SoCal punk rock kid, but like everything from classic rock to some of the milder hip-hop/rap

I love teaching and look forward to meeting and getting to know your kids this year as they get ready for their lives beyond high school.
